Ojude Oba is a significant cultural and religious festival celebrated the Yoruba community located in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State in southwest Nigeria. The festival is held annually in Ijebu-Ode, typically on the third day after Eid-el-Kabir (also known as Eid al-Adha), the Muslim festival of sacrifice. The festival is highlighted by colorful fashion, glamour, beauty and royalty.
Ojude Oba, which means “the King’s Courtyard” in Yoruba, has its roots in the 19th century. It began as a Muslim religious event where adherents would visit the Awujale (the traditional ruler of Ijebu land) to pay homage and express gratitude for the protection and prosperity granted by the Almighty. Over time, the festival evolved to include people of various religious backgrounds and has become a unifying event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people.
The history of the festival dates back to over 100 years ago when a prominent Chief Balogun Kuku, one of the leading personalities in the community, accepted Islam. He decided to gather his friends, families, and well-wishers to pay homage to the king for giving them the opportunity to practice their religion peacefully.
In recent years, Ojude Oba has grown in prominence and is celebrated with Pomp and pageantry by millions from different parts of the world, especially by Yoruba’s of Ijebu descent. In Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, the festival has evolved into a major cultural event that attracts people from all over Nigeria and beyond. The festival is a time for the Ijebu people to come together and celebrate their king, their culture, and their heritage. They show up in cultural attires looking dandy and radiant.
Traditional drummers, dancers, and masquerades perform during the festival, adding to the vibrant and festive atmosphere. These performances celebrate the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the Ijebu people. Community leaders, dignitaries, and representatives of various groups visit the Awujale to pay their respects. One of the most important aspects of the festival is the parade of the various age grades (regberegbe) in the Ijebu community. A group of young men represent each age grade by dressing in colourful costumes and performing traditional dances. This is the heart of the ceremony as each group with both male and female counterparts are distinct either in their manner of appearance and style of dressing or by their dance patterns.
Also, the horses play a significant role during the festival. They adorn their bodies in colourful material and beads. Members of influential families ride them during their parades. Different horse-riding families are led by the Balogun. Descendants of Ijebu war heroes are regarded as the Balogun. Intermittent gunshots are used to announce their entry, which sends many people into a frenzy.
Attires from a previous festival cannot be worn again at a new Ojude Oba festival, they wear entirely different attires year to year demonstrating the flamboyance and flair traditional families use to makes a statement on the economic status and wealth.
Ojude Oba is more than just a cultural festival, it is a symbol of history, heritage and culture for the Ijebu community. It promotes cultural preservation, social cohesion, and economic development. The 2024 edition will go down in history as the best, as the glamour and colour that came with it went viral and thrilled social media users. Many people emerged as the faces of the event due to their aura and performance during the festivity.
